Preface: I rant. It’s what I do. It’s what I live for. I hate it when people are so ONE-SIDED on things.
The whole “No it can’t be that because it’s this” thing needs to stop. Especially since stories are borrowed from by other stories ALL THE TIME!! Take this from a writer. I KNOW this happens.
On the topic of Disney’s “Frozen” people have been telling me it is NOTHING like Wicked. Let me paint a picture for you.
You don’t have to agree with me, but you also don’t have to say it isn’t Wicked. Because it pretty much is at it’s core. Bear with me – please take a moment to hear me out before saying “no.”
They are sisters, I know that isn’t what Glinda and Elphaba are, but they have similar roles to Glinda and Elphaba.
Elsa is despised because of her magic, Elphaba is despised because she is green. Both are thought to be evil.
Anna is kind, Glinda is kind. Both believe they can help Elphaba/Elsa to fix the mess that has arisen from their actions.
I would say that is “Wicked” enough for me.
Since when has Disney EVER truly followed a real story? No. Pretty much never.
(The Lion King is based on William Shakespeare’s, Hamlet, guys… I mean. Seriously? That is definitely not a kids story… everyone kills everyone else)
The Brothers Grimm fairy-tales are totally screwed up in Disney’s eyes to make them happy and child friendly.
This VERY EASILY could be Wicked. Who cares if the guys they like aren’t in the story? It’s quite basically Wicked. And sure the story may be based off of the Snow Queen, but that doesn’t mean it is SOLELY that. And ideas are never solely one persons. I am aware the Snow Queen was written earlier and that The Wizard of Oz is a totally different story, but who’s to say that when Wicked was being written they didn’t take parts of Anderson’s story for part of theirs? No it isn’t plagiarism. It’s just good writing. Ideas are not solely one persons. So yes, This story MAY be based off of the Snow Queen, but it is also Disney’s version of Wicked no matter what you say to combat me on it. I have proof.
(Yes, I know it is in another language. But it’s a picture I wanted to use)
Disney doesn’t do Broadway? Think again. Just because they aren’t taking Broadway shows and turning them into movies doesn’t mean a thing. They are sending shows to Broadway, are they not? Newsies, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, etc. Disney doesn’t do Broadway. HAH. lies.
And Mary Poppins was created as a stage musical by……….
dun dun dun
argument of Disney not doing Broadway = invalid.
The Songs of Frozen and Wicked compared:
(Think of these songs next time you listen to them, or compare them right now, youtube is just a click a way.)
Let It Go = No Good Deed
For the First Time in Forever = Defying Gravity
Love is An Open Door = Thank Goodness (loosely)
Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? = Popular (loosely)
Fare thee well!!
P.S. Feel free to comment with your views. Just don’t tell me I’m wrong after all of that proof I just gave you. Oh and Idina Menzel plays Elsa who also played the first Elphaba on Broadway and Kristen Chenoweth played the first Glinda on Broadway and they just happened to get a Kristen (Bell) to play Anna in Frozen…. Hmmm…. Coincidence? Of course! Lucky coincidence? For sure. It helps my argument even though their names have nothing to do with the stories.
